Obituary for Martha E. Shorter

Alamosa – Valley resident, Martha E. Shorter, 94, passed away on July 11th, 2013 at The Bridge At Alamosa Assisted Living Facility in Alamosa, Colorado. She was born on August 5th, 1918 in Conyers, Georgia to George Fee Alexander and Martha Larue Alexander. She graduated from the Georgia State College For Women (GSCW).
Martha married Myron Lester (“Les”) Shorter on January 26th, 1940. She worked nearly 31 years as a teacher at Our Lady of The Holy Rosary School in Perrine, Florida, retiring in 1991. After relocating to Stuart, Florida upon retirement, she enjoyed membership in the League of Women Voters and The Stuart Garden Club. She served as Secretary for the Banyan House Condominium Association, where she resided. Martha enjoyed tutoring her grandchildren in math and science during their elementary and middle school years. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, crocheting, needlepoint and gardening.
She is survived by her brother, Luke Alexander & his wife, JoAnn of Jackson, Georgia; son Michael H. Shorter & his wife, Paulette of Nathrop, Colorado, daughter Martha Larue Goodwin & her husband, Don of Lewisville, North Carolina; grandson Alexander M. Shorter & his wife, Ashley of Mableton, Georgia; grand-daughter Jillian R. Geis & her husband, Ryan of Gainesville, Florida; grand-daughter Elizabeth (“Beth”) Miller of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; grandson Ethan Shorter of New Orleans, Louisiana; grand-daughter Dr. Rose Poon & her husband, Kasey of Salt Lake City, Utah; grand-daughter Serena Willis of Chicopee, Massachusetts; great grand-daughters Adelyn and Alexandra (“Addie” & “Allie”) Shorter; great grandson Rex Conway Geis; great grand-daughter Ashley Willis; great grand-daughters Kallie & Trinity Poon; great grandson William Poon and daughter-in-law Donna Shorter of South Hadley, Massachusetts.
Martha was preceded in death by parents George & Larue, husband Les, brothers George, Selwyn and Gaines, sister Josephine and sons Myron A. Shorter & William G. Shorter.
Final arrangements are being handled by the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa, Colorado. A Catholic Funeral Mass and memorial gathering will take place in Conyers, Georgia, with interment in a family plot on a date to be determined.
