Obituary for Marsha Ann Backes (Harral)

Marsha Ann Backes, age 64, went to be with her Lord in the comfort of her mountain cabin home surrounded by her beloved husband and children on February, 21, 2016. Marsha Ann was born on October 8, 1951 to William F. “Biff” and JoAnne Harral in Oceanside, CA at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Hospital.

Marsha lived in California until 1960 when her family moved to Mancos, CO. She graduated from Mancos High School in 1969. Marsha wed her college sweetheart, Joseph Backes, on June 10, 1973. She held a BA and MA in Special Education from Adams State University and taught special education during her professional career—most of which was spent teaching in the Lamar School District until she retired in 2009.

Marsha was well-known for her steadfast Christian faith and love of her family. She had a yearning to travel throughout her life and was able to travel to London, Canada, and most of the west coast of the U.S. Her desire to re-locate to a cooler climate was realized when she and her husband, Joseph, built their dream cabin in scenic Forbes Park in Fort Garland, CO. Anyone that spent time with Marsha immediately learned of her unmistakable sense of humor—she had an ability to make people laugh and smile wherever she went.

Marsha is proceeded in death by her Mother, Jo Anne Harral, and her Father, William F. “Biff” Harral.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, Joseph Backes of Fort Garland, CO; her children Kristina and Greg Cook of Alamosa, CO, Melissa and Elvie Conley of Alamosa, CO, and Michael and Kidron Backes of La Junta, CO; her grandchildren Brittny Cook, Joseph Backes, Ian Backes, Tyler Cook, Elah Backes, Emily Cook, and Lillie Backes; her brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Diane Harral, of Colorado Springs, CO; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memorial services will be handled by Rogers Family Mortuary and will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 26th at the Living Water Bible Fellowship church at 2910 Clark Street, Alamosa, CO.

Donations in memory of Marsha may be made to the Hospice de Valle at 514 Main Street in Alamosa, CO.
