Welp. The Lord has taken another ‘good-one’ from this life. Mark Layne Jackson, 41, returned back to the presence of our Heavenly Father and his beloved younger brother Trey Jackson on February 11, 2022. What a reunion that surely was! Understanding why Mark had to go is tough, but we can smile knowing he likely enjoyed the travels and homecoming. Although Mark was born in the San Luis Valley, he spent the early years of his life in different parts of the world. He had a passion for travel but a heart that always brought him back to his San Luis Valley Home. Born on June 7, 1980 to Vaughn and Sue Jackson in La Jara, Colorado--the third of five children, he learned from the start the value of family. Mark was intense—full of life, humor and passion. He was extremely hard working both on the family ranch and in the office.  His father-in-law, Dan Bond, admiringly described Mark as a “tenacious negotiator”. Mark always enjoyed an intelligent argument and was very honest—sometimes to a fault. His contagious laugh could fill a room and his mischievousness would often land others at the receiving end of a prank. Mark loved to play hard with his family in the mountains, hunting, snowmobiling, riding razrs, fishing in Alaska, and rounding up cows in Ramah with the Bonds. It is well-known that Mark had a huge heart, but it may be lesser known how much he did for others as he was never boastful about his service or generosity.  While Mark will be greatly missed, we will still be able to see him and his example in the eyes and smiles of his four amazing children.

Mark was very successful here on Earth.  As a youngster, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and participated in multiple sports.  Mark played football at the college level until he left to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Barcelona, Spain. Upon honorably returning from his mission, Mark used ingrained law techniques to successfully convince his high school sweetheart, Jennifer Bond, to marry him on July 5, 2002 in the Albuquerque Temple. The newlyweds graduated from Adams State College in 2004 before Mark entered Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan.  While in Michigan, Mark and Jennifer welcomed to the world their first daughter, Jaelyn.  After graduating law school, Mark accepted his first job at Vannah and Vannah Law Firm in Las Vegas, where he enjoyed living with his family for the following 10 years.  During that HOT time in Vegas, Mark and Jennifer “hit it big” by also welcoming their only son Cole and sweet younger daughters, Madelyn and Olivia, into the world.  Mark loved being a father and he took every opportunity to teach, tease, and cheer on his kids. Luckily, in August of 2017, Mark was able to move his family back to the “blue shadows…and rose-tinted clouds in the west” of his San Luis Valley Home where he started Jackson Law.  Not shying away from extra work, he also joined the Richard Harris Law Firm out of Las Vegas starting in January of 2019.

Mark loved to travel and he wasn’t afraid to make friends. He knew some amazing people. He is survived by his wife of twenty years, Jennifer; children Jaelyn (16), Cole Mark(13), Madelyn (11), and Olivia(9); parents Dr. Vaughn D. Jackson, MD and Sue A. Buddington Jackson; siblings, KariAnn Jackson and Travis R. Christiansen, Esq, Dr. Vaughn D Jackson Jr, MD and Nicole Westwood, Brett Turner Jackson and Sara Dustin; Grandmother, Karen R. Jackson; Father-in-law, Dan A. Bond; mother-in-law, Janet Gilleland Bond; Brothers-in-law Brent D. Bond and Lauren Lincoln and C. Bart Bond and Krista Miller; sister-in-law Danette Bond and the late Perry Sowards; 30 nieces and nephews, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.  He is preceded in death by his younger brother Trey B. Jackson, brother-in-law Perry Sowards, Grandfathers, Alfred R. Jackson, Roger C. Buddington, and L.R. Wainwright, his grandmother, Ann T. Wainwright, and his Great-Grandmother, Grace E. Nielsen.
