Obituary for Leota Moore DeSouchet

Alamosa resident Leota Moore DeSouchet died peacefully in her sleep, Jan 11, 2022 at Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa, Colorado. She was 99.

Leota was born in Bluejacket, Oklahoma on May 4, 1922 to Leonard and Nelle Moore. She and her family moved to the San Luis Valley when she was six years old. She graduated from Sargent High School when she was 16. She went to business school in Denver and returned to Alamosa to work at Public Service for 5 1/2 years before eloping with William O. DeSouchet and being married in Santa Fe by a justice of the peace in 1950.

Leota and Bill lived happily and raised their family in Alamosa. They started sailing in 1961 at San Luis Lake and were founding members of the short lived SLV Yacht Club which foundered when the lake got too low. Leota took care of the large family yard at 211 West Ave for years and kept it beautiful despite Gus, the Irish Setter’s efforts.

Leota was an avid bridge player. She saw to it that her whole family attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church faithfully. She loved dancing in her younger days. She played a lot of golf and luckily she had a good sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William O. DeSouchet in 2010. Her brothers, Roy and Lloyd Moore and her sisters Fay Elliot, Dolores White also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children Kathryn of La Jara, Colorado, William (Janis) of Alamosa, Colorado, Charles (Bunny) of New England, North Dakota, her grandchildren Kelli Arbogast, Aimee Larsen, Jennifer DeSouchet and Nicole DeSouchet and her sister Betty DeGrant of Denver and numerous nieces and nephews.
