Obituary

Longtime Alamosa resident Larry Leroy Squires, Sr, 77, passed away on May 5, 2020. He was born on December 16, 1942 in Flint, Michigan to James Robert Squires, Sr. and Gladys Lucinda DeWitt Squires. Larry grew up in Michigan and in September of 1961, he married Shirley Elizabeth Donders. In 1977 they moved their family to Alamosa. While here in Alamosa, Larry owned and operated Squires Signs and a paint and auto body shop. Larry was an avid hunter, a passionate storyteller a creative pinstripe artist and also enjoyed mechanic work and making jewelry. There were very few things that Larry couldn’t do. Larry was one of the toughest guys around and he taught his children and grandchildren to be tough, he was often heard telling them to just walk it off. He had a gentle side as well, he was a caring man, who was often found to be very generous to those in need and above all, he was proud of his family and loved them more than anything.

Larry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Squires of Alamosa, his children, Larry (Christine) Squires of Pueblo, Shelley (Herb) Horn of Gillette, Wyoming, Steven (Laura) Squires of Clay Center, Kansas, Sam (Carey) Squires of Mancelona, Michigan and Shirlee (Jamie) Maurath of Cripple Creek, Colorado, his grandchildren, Elizabeth (Joe) Naill, Waylon (Autumn) Squires, Willie Squires, Karrie (Danny) Allen, Kimberly Horn, Kacie (Nathan) Sheppard, Kamber (Quinten) Beck, Kelley Horn, Kayla Squires, Zach Squires, Colby Squires, Preaston Squires, Sam Squires, Jr., Chloe Squires, Cali Squires, Hunter Squires and Mikey Maurath, as well as numerous great grandchildren, his siblings, James (Rosie) Squires, Kevin (Cindy) Squires, Cindy Pike, Joyce Squires, Vicki Squires and Tomalou Squires as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Arlene Werner.

Cremation was selected and a memorial service will be held on Saturday June 20th, 2020 at 2pm at the Schillings Springs in the Alamosa Canyon. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Alamosa Christian Church and may be made in care of the funeral home office.
