Obituary for Jo Bowers

On February 13, 2019, Josephine (Jo) Bowers, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge greeted by all of her furry and feathered friends who were waiting for her there. Jo was born August 21, 1928, in Saguache County, Colorado, to Joseph (Dode) and Thelma Crow. She grew up on their Ranch/Homestead which is now part of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. She graduated from Mosca High School and attended Adam State College before going to Nurses Training in Denver, where she met the love of her life, Bob Bowers. They were married in September 1948. They raised cattle and sheep in the Mosca area before moving to Alamosa. Jo worked for Dr. Anderson, Dr. Bradshaw and Dr. Gray. When Dr. Gray left the area she began a job with The Colorado Department of Agriculture and was a founding member of The San Luis Valley Museum. She was an active member of the Alamosa Seniors, of whom she considered her “extended family”. One of her favorite activities was quilting and was a member of several quilt guilds and loved sharing her passion with everyone. Jo was an animal lover from the day she was born and was always taking in and caring for strays.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Dode and Thelma, brother Victor Crow, sister Shirley Mullings, twin sons who died at birth and husband Robert (Bob) Bowers. She is survived by her daughter Toni Bowers, nieces Vicki Sue (Ken) Davis, Sandi (Dwight) Olkjer, Jody (Dick) Hale, nephew Rick Mullings and her loving dog Ora and Ora’s newly adopted family and special friends Amber and Jane Moeller.

A celebration of life will be held on August 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion, 514 Fourth Street in Alamosa, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, continue her kindness and compassion by making a donation to or volunteering at the Valley Humane League. Donations can be to The Valley Humane League and sent in care of Rogers Family Mortuary.
