Obituary for Jose Francisco "Joe" Atencio
Joe F. Atencio
San Antonio, Colorado – Joe Atencio, 86, passed away December 16, 2015 at Conejos County Hospital in La Jara.
He was born June 16, 1929 in San Antonio to Zacharias and Manuelita Atencio. He was united in marriage to Ruby Maria Garcia on January 18, 1953 in Conejos. The union was blessed with six children.
Joe worked for Helm’s Potato Company for many years, he also worked for Conejos County Road and Bridge. He retired from South Conejos School District in 1993 after 23 years of dedicated services. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
His hobbies included chopping wood, playing his guitars and walking his dog. He loved watching the Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune on television. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include Ruby, his loving wife of 62 years, three sons Eloy (Cheyenne), Erold (Joyce), Andrew (Ernestine), two daughters Elaine (Felipe Blea), Elizabeth (Dale Cisneros), 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, two brothers Benny Atencio of Pueblo, Silviano (Shorty) Atencio of Alamosa, three sisters Vera Martinez of Antonito, Berlinda Madrid and Eleanor Sisneros both of Denver, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and four sisters and an infant son.
A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos. The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. also at the church. Interment will be held at a later date.
