Obituary

Longtime and well known La Jara resident Joe R. Casias, 93, died May 8, 2020 at the Evergreen Nursing
Home in Alamosa.

Joe’s life began on July 8, 1926 in Vigil Colorado, the proud son of Pedro and Elauteria Martinez Casias.
He married Frieda Ruybal in November of 1949. They had a long and wonderful life together, She
preceded him in death in 2013.

Together with his wife they raised and are survived by their children Loretta (Mike) Gonzales and Sandra
(John) Lucero; his grandchildren Aaron Lucero, Todd (Shauna and family) Lucero, Lisa Vigil (Steve), and
Michael Gonzales; his great-grandchildren Autumn (Mannie) Vigil, Connor Vigil, and Jordan Lucero (Ryan); and his great-great-grandchild Liam Ortiz; as well as his sister Julia Garcia of Clifton, AZ and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Joe was a Conejos County Commissioner for 16years. He belonged to the Colorado Council of
Government (COG), Colorado Small Counties Committee, and served on the boards of the Guadalupe
Credit Union and Colorado HMO. He was also a member of the Romeo Fire Department for many years.
He always stated that he was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He enjoyed farming, mechanic
work, and carpentry. He also loved to fish and hunt small game, gardening (he hated weeds), and loved
to visit with family and friends. He also liked to travel and see the sights. Joe had a good sense of
humor and never lacked a joke to share. He enjoyed being around people and helping them anyway he
could.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Pete Casias, Jr., Rose Chavez, Elosia Valdez, Mary
Mares, and Ernest Casias; as well as his wife Frieda.

Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be announced at a future date.
