Obituary for Ivan K. Gylling
Ivan K. Gylling was born to Otto Walter Gylling and Arzella Knight, on July 12, 1935 in La Jara, CO. After ten sisters, he was a much loved and adored surprise. Ivan spent his childhood between La Jara CO and Mesa, Arizona, during which time his father farmed in both places. When Ivan turned 19, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; serving in the Great Lakes Mission. He brought many souls to the gospel, and helped fellow missionaries purchase food and basic supplies.
Post mission, Ivan attended Arizona State University, earning a degree in Agronomy, during which time he was placed on the Dean’s list, for academic achievement. Ivan had a brilliant mind and love for learning.
On May 14, 1958, Ivan married the love of his life, Nathel Rodney, in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. It was a match made in heaven resulting in 64 years of marriage and 11 children. Ivan and Nathel raised their family in LaJara, Colorado while Ivan spent all sixty-four years farming his ground. Ivan loved his farm and taught his children to work hard. Ivan was passionate about many things. He belonged to the LaJara Rotary club, where he was awarded fifty years perfect attendance. Ivan loved to snowmobile, where he would spend Saturdays, racing his children and grandchildren. He even earned the name “Snowmobile King” Fishing was something which was a very serious business for Ivan. There isn’t a stream, river, or lake, that he passed up. He continued to fish at his two cabins, even in his last year of his life. Ivan loved nature, the mountains and spending time with all of his family. We will miss his laugh, his jokes, his advice, his stories, and the wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and Grandpa that he is.
He is survived by his wife Nathel Gylling of LaJara; his children Walter(Kristi) Gylling of LaJara, David(Laurie) Gylling of LaJara, Trenna(Steve) Brady of Monte Vista, Dane(Renae) Gylling of Alamosa, Daughter in law Betsy Fernelius, Nathel (Mike) Rodriguez of LaJara, Shawn(Lisa) Gylling of Chandler, AZ, Vicki(Gene) DeHerrera of Sacramento, CA, Kristie(Shawn) Thomas of Bountiful, CO, Shanna (Kevin) Moye of Atoka, OK, and Rochelle(Tyler) Faucette of Sanford, CO; 44 grandchildren, 83 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Ivan is preceded in death by his parents, his son Kelly Gylling, his siblings: Dorothy, Donna, Lola, Lena and J Gylling; his grandchildren Craig and Benjamin and daughter-in-law Kathy Gylling.
A visitation and viewing will be held on Thursday March 17 at Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa from 5-7 pm. There will be an additional viewing from 9:45 to 10:45 am with the funeral service to follow on Friday March 18, 2022. Services will be held 11:00 am at the La Jara Second Ward building of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
