Our always constant and reliable North Star has become our eternal flame. Helen Comstock Myers celebrated her 98th birthday on April 14 and passed away peacefully on August 4, 2017 in her own home with loving family present.

Always with grace and dignity and in her quiet, humble way, Helen meant so much to so many. It was common for someone to tell a story of being inspired by her or come to the house to thank her for championing them 50 years earlier. As mother to 4 children, Kent (Cindi), Carl (Karen), Michele (Jon), and Jeffery; grandmother to Ryan (Melia), Lisa (Luis), Kevin and Chase; and great grandmother to Luis Giovanni, Gianni Brandt and Malinai Elizabeth, she listed her family as her shining glory, not her phenomenal intelligence or unwavering adherence to strong character values.

Growing up with a 2nd generation immigrant mother, Ella, and hard working father, Carl, Helen decided that financial hardship wouldn't be a factor preventing goal attainment. As a woman growing up in the early 1900s, Helen relied on her wit, integrity and incredible work ethic to soar beyond conventional boundaries. The Great Depression left an indelible lesson for the need of preparedness in the future and she worked diligently to pay for her own education. She pushed herself to new heights and received her pilot’s license in a male dominated milieu. Helen caught the eye of a handsome young man with similar values and aspirations who soon was deployed to fly planes for the United States Navy in WWII. Helen married the late Judge Whitford W. Myers in Key West, Florida on July 27, 1944. After the war, they both attended law school at Denver University. She was admitted to the Colorado bar in 1947. The young couple chose Alamosa as their home and an ideal location to raise a family.

Helen C. Myers embodied the best traits of the Greatest Generation, with its towering achievements, built by sweat, perseverance and tenacity, from very modest beginnings. She was always motivated to reach for the stars. Her light shone brightest when reflecting her can do/will do attitude. Sacrifices were willingly and humbly made along the way but she found many joys in the journey.

Helen was proud to be appointed Alamosa City’s first female Municipal Judge on July 1,1957 and retired from the bench 28 years later. She continued to maintain a legal practice and was a devoted wife and mother. Helen had a lifelong passion for music, acquiring this love from her banjo playing father, and could often play a piano piece after hearing it only once. She loved animals and undoubtedly will be met at the Pearly Gates by wagging tails and many purrs. Helen was gratified to volunteer her time to prepare the legal documents and official filings necessary for the incorporation of the early Valley Humane League.

Helen loved her PEO sisters and greatly valued her PEO affiliation (1983-2011). She had many long and treasured friendships. She tap danced her way into her 80s and continued to read several newspapers and journals weekly. Helen’s mind was sharp with remarkable recall, correct prose and syntax up until her final days. She was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church.

There are many people the family would like to acknowledge but particular heartfelt thanks is extended to Glenna Plane, RN and Hospice del Valle, Anne Tourny, RN and Kelly Diss, CNA for their compassionate care. Additionally, we are grateful to the Kelly family, et.al., from the Ft. Garland area for their dedicated Christian service on mom’s behalf.
