Obituary for Francis M. "Fran" Strnad

Longtime Alamosa resident Francis M. “Fran” Strnad, 75, died August 22, 2022 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.

Fran’s life began on April 24, 1947 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the oldest son of Lloyd and Olga (Brezina) Strnad. He was raised in Colorado Springs and graduated from Wasson High School, followed by graduation from the University of Colorado in 1970 with a degree in business. Fran served in the United States Air Force Thunderbirds from 1970-1972, stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. While in Nevada, he married his first wife, Barbara, and also received a degree in accounting from UNLV.

After leaving the military, Fran and Barbara moved to Colorado Springs, where daughter Stacy Marie Strnad was born in 1975. Fran embarked on his career in accounting.

Fran came to the San Luis Valley in 1982 when offered a position at Affiliated Bank in Center. He married Beverly Teem in 1990 and they have made their home near Alamosa since.

The next step in Fran’s 38 year banking career was at Rio Grande County Bank in Del Norte and Monte Vista. He continued working there when it was sold to Community Bankshares, retiring in 2011. Finding that he truly missed working, Fran helped lay the groundwork and open Frontier Bank in Alamosa, which opened its doors spring 2013. He worked at Frontier until his second retirement in 2020. Fran poured himself into his work as an Agriculture Lender, helping individuals, serving the institutions he worked for, mentoring others and forming many friendships along the way. He was a very thoughtful, careful and precisely organized person who took pride in making everything just right, while still maintaining his sense of humor. Fran was an avid golfer and spent many hours honing his golfing skills on the course with family, friends and colleagues. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed shooting sporting clays. Fran also enjoyed his cars (Fords only), motorcycles, his lawn, collecting things that brought him joy such as watches, Hershey’s with almonds, beef and potatoes (especially potato chips), and having a beer with a friend or family member. Fran was a man of faith, devoted to his family, his home, his country, his customers and friends.

Fran is survived by his wife Bev Strnad of Alamosa; his daughter Stacy Marie Strnad of Port Orange, FL; his brother Daniel L. (Judy) Strnad of Steamboat Springs, CO; his brothers-in-law Leroy (Lori) Teem of Alamosa and Rodney Teem; his nieces and nephews Gaby Strnad of Chicago, IL; Tyler Strnad of Steamboat Springs, CO; Glenna Clayton, Michelle Romero, Kaylene VanHorn, Jaelyn Johnson, Connie Robinson, Shauna Curtis, David Teem, and Jimmy Teem all of Alamosa; his special cousin Betty Babcock of Nebraska; as well as numerous extended family and many friends.

Fran is preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Olga; his parents-in-law Robert and Lena Teem, his daughter Stacy’s mother Barbara Strnad and other extended family members.
