Obituary for Frances Wyland (Yunikar)

Frances “Fran” Wyland passed away March 19, 2019 at the River Valley Inn Nursing Home in Del Norte, Colorado. She was a 97 years old at the time of her passing and had lived in the Monte Vista area for most of her life. Fran was born in Salida, Colorado on August 7, 1921, to Ignatz and Frances Yunikar and grew up on the family ranch near Poncha Springs. She came to Alamosa as a teenager where she met Hubert “Hubie” Wyland and they were married in Taos, New Mexico in September of 1946, following the end of World War II. They were married for over 60 years until Hubie’s passing in 2008.

Fran was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved to pass on her skills in sewing beautiful quilts and baking incredible cinnamon rolls and apple strudel to her family. She gave many years of service to 4-H clubs teaching many young seamstresses a perfect gather and hem stitch. She and Hubie took great delight in their flower and vegetable gardens and turned their home west of Monte Vista into a little Eden. Over the years it was also a sanctuary to a many lost cat and great many dogs, as well. She loved the outdoors and the time spent at the cabin Hubie built in Legion Park near South Fork. She and Hubie also loved to travel and saw many exotic places in their later years, and spent a great deal of time in Hawaii, which they greatly loved.

Fran is survived by her daughters Jan Shriver Wyland of Longmont and Shelley Wyland (Chuck) Whitmer of Del Norte; grandchildren Stacy (Cary) Stanfield of Morrison, Becky (Chris) Olberding and daughter Ahnalysse of Longmont, Jennifer (Jamie) Tatch and sons Ferris and Eli of Kings Langley, UK, Zachary Whitmer of Monte Vista, and Samuel (Taylor) Whitmer of Fort Collins.
