Obituary for Estella J. Casias

Estella “Stella” J. Casias, 78

Stella Casias passed away on May 13, 2022 at Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa, Colorado. Stella was born on March 12, 1944 in Manassa, Colorado to Pedro “Pete” Casias Jr. and Domitila (Trujillo) Casias. She was born with cerebral palsy and was never able to walk. At birth, she weighed a pound and a half, and her parents were told she would not survive past three months of life. Stella beat the odds and lived a quiet and humble life for 78 years. Stella lived the majority of her life in Romeo, Colorado surrounded by family before moving to La Jara, Colorado in 1995. She was cared for by her parents until their deaths in 1995 and 1997, and then later by her sister, Mary (Casias) Pacheco until her death in 2001. Upon Mary’s death, Stella was cared for by her nieces and nephew.

Stella loved to talk on the phone with friends and family, and would call her aunt, nieces, and nephew multiple times daily to catch up on how their day was going. She also enjoyed playing bingo, listening to Spanish music, watching novelas on television, looking at magazines, and counting coins. She enjoyed watching The Price is Right every weekday morning. Stella had an extremely sharp memory and was very good at remembering numbers. She could remember the birthdates, death dates, and anniversaries of any person she knew.

She is survived by her nephew William Pacheco of La Jara, CO, and three nieces, Christine Martinez of Alamosa, CO, Lorraine Garcia of Mogote, CO, and Angela (Travis) Gonzales of Manassa, CO. She is also survived by her great nieces and nephews Melanie Martinez, Lisa (Dominic) Khoketkham, Laura Garcia, Matthew Garcia, Brandon Gonzales, and Ryan Gonzales, and six great, great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her aunt Cleo Pacheco of La Jara, CO.

She is preceded in death by her parents Pete and Domitila Casias, her sister Mary (Pablo) Pacheco, and her nephew-in-law Richard Garcia. She is also preceded in death by four brothers Paul, John, Abraham, and Alberto, and an infant sister, all of whom died in infancy.
