Obituary for Coleen S. Guymon

Coleen Sowards Guymon, 92, completed her earthly mission on Thursday, January 21, 2021, in LaJara, Colorado. Coleen was born to Roland Hubert and Laura Verina Crowther Sowards on May 8, 1928 in Manassa, Colorado. She grew up in a happy home full of love. Throughout her life, Coleen treasured her close relationship with her parents and each of her five siblings. She graduated from high school in Manassa and completed further education at Pueblo Beauty College and Central Business College in Denver, Colorado.

Coleen was full of energy and owned and ran her own beauty shop for many years, while at the same time raising a large family. She also worked as a legal secretary.

Coleen met the love of her life, Norman Clyde Guymon, at a July 24th dance in Manassa. They were married the following May, on her birthday May 8, 1949 in Manassa. Norman and Coleen were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on November 28, 1980.

Norman and Coleen were blessed with seven children: Dennis - LaJara, Colorado, Kelly (Candee) - Roy, Utah, Natalie Johnson (Mike) - Sanford, Colorado, Blaine (Annette) - LaJara, Colorado, Brian - LaJara, Colorado, Melanie Huggins (Mark) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jamie Mortensen (Shane) - Sanford, Colorado. The blessings continued as they welcomed 34 grandchildren and 89 great grandchildren into their family.

Coleen greatly missed Norman who preceded her in death on August 18, 2001. Also preceding her in death were her loving parents, her sweet daughter-in-law Kathy Guymon, her brothers Cline Sowards, Bill Sowards and Morris Sowards, and her sister Jean Ford, as well as numerous other family members.

Coleen is survived by one sister, Marie Burt, sisters-in-law Larna Sowards, Pauline Jackson and Bessie Shawcroft, and many other close family members.

Coleen was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lovingly served and lifted those around her throughout her life. Deeply planted within her heart was faith in Jesus Christ and striving to love as He did. Coleen’s positive and loving influence in the lives of all who knew her will always be remembered. Her family will especially cherish the example, memories and love of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and look forward to the day of being together with her again.

A private family service will be held.
