Obituary for Charles Bud "Chuck" Sumner Sr.

Charles Bud "Chuck"  Sumner Sr.
Alamosa resident Charles Bud “Chuck” Sumner, Sr., passed away on December 10, 2017. He was born on August 10, 1923 in Alamosa to John Western Sr. and Leona Marie Sharp Sumner. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps and spent 33 months in the South Pacific during World War II. In 2014 Chuck and his son Bud participated in the Honor Flight and Chuck had the opportunity to place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Chuck married Frankie Franell Beckwith and they were sealed in the Manti Temple. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father and granddad whose love of family was unsurpassed and never questioned. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings in the church including Branch President of the Moffat Branch. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing and camping. He was still riding a horse at the age of 90. In 1969 he built a cabin in Crestone where many memories were made with his family, before the family sold it in 2000. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Veterans of Foreign War.

Chuck is survived by his children, Ronny L. Reed, Charles Bud (Becky) Sumner, Jr., Steven (Georgia Van Iwaarden) Sumner and Iris Henry, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, his sister, Geraldine Oba, his brother John Sumner, Sr. as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frankie, his brothers, Sidney Sumner and Harold Sumner and his sister Marie Ryker.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Alamosa Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa on Friday evening. Interment will follow services in the Sanford Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to Hospice Del Valle or to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center Oncology Wing and may be made in care of the Funeral Home office.
