Bernice Sena May Marlatt Myers

Long time Center resident, Bernice Sena May Marlatt Myers, died on January 18, 2017 at the Bridge in Alamosa. She was born August 28, 1928 in Haxtun, Colorado to William F. Marlatt and Anina Dorothy (Christensen) Marlatt. She was the fifth of six children born to the Marlatts.

Bernice spent her early childhood on the Colorado plains, then her family moved to Hygiene, Colorado where her father operated a dairy and hay farm. During World War II, Bernice could often be found helping her father in the dairy barn while most of the men were serving their country. She helped her mother in the large garden that fed the family each year. Her mother also imparted a love of flowers to Bernice and her sisters. She graduated from Longmont High School in 1946.

Bernice met Robert William Myers of Center on a blind date while attending Colorado State University. That blind date led to marriage on May 23, 1948 and lasted over 68 years. Bob and Bernice moved to a home east of Center and farmed in that area for fifty-four years. They raised their four children there as well. Her interests were wide and varied. Besides her family, she loved gardening, antiques (especially sun-purpled glass), animals, music, traveling, cooking and baking, jeeping in the San Juans, fishing, camping, and handwork. She was a true partner on the farm and helped with the livestock, rogued barley and potatoes, drove trucks during potato harvest, kept the books, and cooked many a delicious meal for harvest crews. She was a member of the Center United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Myers of Center and Alamosa, daughters Linda Kay Myers Haverland of Littleton, Colorado and Janet Lee Myers Kuntz of Center, and her son John D. Myers (Ginny Bond) of Hooper, her sisters Verda Walter of Tucson, Arizona and Phyllis Greenbank of Ft. Collins, Colorado. She was a very special grandmother to 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several other fine young persons who called her Grandma. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Willis Marlatt of Hygiene, Colorado, and her sisters Ellen Skold of Savoy, Illinois and Ardis Irvin of Yucaipa, California, her son Steven Myers of Alamosa, and her son-in-law Jack Kuntz of Center.

Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held at the United Methodist Church in Center, Colorado on Friday, January 27 at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions can be made to Center United Methodist Church.
