Obituary for Barbara Jane Martin

Barbara Jane (Abel) Martin passed away on January 24, 2022 in Monte Vista, Colorado surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on November 2, 1934 in Pueblo, Colorado to Homer Emerson and Beatrice Lola Abel. She was the youngest of five siblings. She had four older brothers who adored their little “Toots”.

Barbara graduated from Central High School in Pueblo. She married the love of her life, Harold Dean Martin on May 10, 1953. They moved to Center in 1977 to farm potatoes. She worked tirelessly with Harold on the farm for over 13 years. Barbara loved to cook. Anyone who met her knew she cooked the most amazing meals and always opened her home to friends and family. She spent many hours working in her yard and gardening, especially growing rhubarb to make jam and pies. She enjoyed spending time with her family traveling, camping, fishing, and four-wheeling. In her later years, she devoted herself to taking care of her grandkids. She found joy in learning new things and loved animals. Barbara was a kind and compassionate listener. She touched the lives of so many during her life.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Judy (Rob) Phillips of Monte Vista; her daughter-in-law, Dawn Martin of Alamosa; and her brother William (JoAnn) Abel of Pueblo. She is also survived by her grandchildren, JR (D’Anna) Martin of Alamosa; Johanna (Joe) Malouff of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Jarrad Martin of Alamosa; Colton Phillips of Monte Vista; and great-grandson Maverick Martin of Alamosa. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dean; her son, Harold Gene Martin; brothers Homer (Aletha) Abel, George (Donna) Abel, and Jim (Kitty) Abel.

Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held on Monday, January 31st, 2022 at 10:00am at Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista. Burial to follow at Monte Vista Cemetery. Donations can be made in honor of Barbara to the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte.
