Obituary for Carl Dunn

Alton “Carl” Dunn was born September 7, 1951, to Irene Carlson and Alton Dunn in Alamosa, Colorado. He passed away at the age of 70 on March 28, 2022, surrounded by loved ones.

Carl was raised on the family farm near Manassa, along with his two sisters and two brothers. He graduated from Centauri High School in 1969, and then attended Utah Technical College where he obtained a degree in electronics. After college, he lived in Denver working as an auto mechanic.

After the passing of his father, Carl returned home to work on his family’s ranch with his brothers. He was married for time and eternity to Peggy Rogers in January 1977 in Provo, UT. They raised their family on the farm/ranch. Carl was very intelligent and had a special gift for repairing and building just about anything. His skills came in handy countless times over the years. He would often be found working on not only his own projects but those of his friends and family, as well as strangers who were broken down on the side of the road.
Carl enjoyed the beautiful San Luis Valley, and the surrounding mountains, but was also grateful for the opportunity that he had to travel and see many other parts of the country in the semi-truck. He was happy to be able to spend so much time outside, mostly working, but also including camping trips with his sons while they were in Boy Scouts. He especially took pride in the fact that he had been able to climb to the top of Mt. Blanca twice. In more recent years, he enjoyed family outings to the mountains. Carl will be missed by all his family that he loved so much.

Carl struggled with various health issues for many years, which he did without complaint. He always amazed his doctors with his ability to fight and endure. Though his health challenges were an ongoing trial, he and his family were able to experience many tender mercies, including developing a great bond with a special brother-in-law.

Carl is survived by his wife, Peggy; their four children: Michael (Brenda) Dunn of La Jara, Justin (April) Dunn of Sanford, Lindsey (Josh) Jones of Sanford, Janel (Michael) Romero of Wichita Falls, TX; grandchildren: Joseph (Melissa), Joslin (Chance), Jared, Josh, Dawsyn, Caleb, Simeon, Sierra, Kaia, Jason, Jared, Logan, Joslin, James, Mitchell, Hailee, and Wyatt; and siblings: Ruth, Richard (Susan), Jimmy (Teri), and Lenore (Rich); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 4, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints in Manassa. Interment will follow in the Manassa Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 3, from 6-8pm at Rogers Funeral Home in Manassa, and Monday, April 4, from 10:00-10:45am at the church.
