Obituary for Alfred Elmo Roybal

Longtime San Luis Valley Resident Alfred E. Roybal, 82, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family and his two adoring pets ( Chloe and Frye) on December 4, 2020. He was born on November 24, 1938 in Mogote, Colorado to Alfredo and Theodora (Lopez) Roybal. Alfred graduated from McCurty High School in Espanola, New Mexico. On December 7, 1960 he joined the United States Navy and honorably served his country for four years. In June of 1965 Alfred married Arla Frances Ruybal in Conejos, Colorado. He attended Adams State University and worked hard to complete his Master’s Degree. Alfred taught the Adult Education classes in Monte Vista, and taught industrial arts at Sanford High School. Following that, he was employed as loan officer for Rural Development U.S. Department of Agriculture and was a former Conejos County Commissioner. Alfred was an avid reader, he enjoyed hiking, fishing, woodworking, bird watching, arrowhead hunting and silver smithing. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren offering guidance and words of wisdom.

He is survived by his wife Arla Roybal of La Jara, his children, Maxine (Cedric) Romero and Kimberly Roybal, Darrell Maldonado, his grandchildren, Jared Romero, Adrian Romero, Jaimie Romero, Zackary Sullivan, Zane Sullivan, L.J. Sullivan and Antonique Sullivan, three great grandchildren as well as his siblings, Eileen (Moises) Salazar, Phyllis (Alex) Gallegos, Albert (G-Ann) Roybal, Joel (Annette) Roybal and Jeanette Petty as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Alfred was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother David Roybal.
