Obituary for Alex Medina

Alamosa resident Alejandrino “Alex” F. Medina, 81, died September 21, 2022 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.

Alex’s life began on March 30, 1941 in Capulin, Colorado the son to Juan E. Medina and Isabel Mondragon Medina. He married Mary Julia Martinez in Taos, New Mexico on April 18, 1960.

Alex worked for many years as an Auto Mechanic and Tire Repairman. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and loved watching them play. He also liked to gamble at the casinos, on occasion. In his early years, he played football for the Buena Vista Angels as a quarterback and enjoyed boxing. He supported his son Ernie ringside with his matches and loved watching him fight. He also served as an Altar Server as a young boy in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Capulin.

Alex liked to rebuild wood furnishings and would give them to any of his family members that needed them.

He is survived by his companion and significant other Janice Pablo of Alamosa; his children Peggy (Mark) Gallegos of Alamosa, Ernie Medina of Alamosa, Isabelle (Vulmaro) Sabala of Monte Vista, CO, and Yvette (Chris) Quintana of Capulin, CO; his son-in-law Aron Chavez, Sr. of Alamosa; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; his sisters Angie Salinas of Pueblo, CO and Carol Mondragon of Colorado Springs, CO; his brother-in-law Paul Rodriguez of Alamosa, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Alex is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter Jackie Ann Chavez, his siblings William (Corine) Medina, Leroy (Francis) Medina, Elvinia Medina, Jimmy Mondragon, and his in-laws, Tony (Socorro) Martinez, Benita (Orlando) Mondragon, Mary Rodriguez, Anita (William) Luna, and Jose Martinez.

A Vigil with Recitation of the Rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2022 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 30, 2022 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow services in the Alamosa Cemetery.
