Obituary for Lorna Marie Booth (Barr)

Lifelong Alamosa resident Lorna Marie Booth, 80, passed away Thursday April 9, 2020 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado with loved ones by her side, following her daughter, Darlene Datkuliak’s passing, just two weeks previous.

Lorna was born August 6, 1939 in Alamosa, Colorado to Harold “Moon” Barr and Marie Johnson Barr. Lorna married her husband of 64 years, Jesse Booth, on June 1, 1955 in Taos, New Mexico. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints they were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles, California temple.

As a devoted educator, Lorna taught at the elementary level for 32 years. Her love for teaching was planted at a young age when her teacher at East Side Elementary in Alamosa, Agnes Langston, required assistance during her absence. She called upon Lorna, an exceptional and trust-worthy student, to teach her own peers. That experience molded the path she would take when choosing a career in education. Lorna graduated valedictorian from Mosca High School. She then received her teaching degree, and later a master’s degree, from Adams State College. She took great pride in seeing what avenues her students took in life as she followed them throughout the many years. Everywhere she went she knew someone she had impacted and if she couldn’t recognize a changing face, she never forgot a name.

It was well known that Lorna was an avid sports fan. From high school sports to college and professional to watching her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She never missed an opportunity to cheer on an individual or team she loved. Alamosa school district honored her as fan of the decade in appreciation for her loyalty to the school and its students. With an almost photographic memory, she could tell you stats and plays made from games occurring years in the past.

Above her tremendous love for teaching and sports, her fondest memories were made while with family and dear friends.

Lorna is survived by her husband, Jesse; her son Bob (Terri) Booth of Alamosa; her son-in-law Gary Datkuliak of Parker; her grandchildren: Laura (Tim) Gifford of Lewiston, Idaho, Jesse Hildebrandt of Denver, Elizabeth (Justin) Guhl of Kiowa, Craig (Kaitlin) Booth of Pueblo, Jerree (Mitch) Canty of Sanford, and Katy Datkuliak of Parker; her great-grandchildren: Noah, Madi, Emma, Owen, Baylon, Daxton, Knoxley, Blakeley and another great-granddaughter in June; her sisters and brother: Donna Parnaby, Nancy Moore and Robert “Bobby” (Diana) Barr; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and daughter.

A private Graveside Service will be held at the Sanford Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her parents.
